Black and white photo of Hoyt Sherman. A resident of Des Moines, Sherman had several impacts on Iowa throughout his lifetime. After working multiple business positions within Iowa, Sherman was elected by Abraham Lincoln to become the Army Paymaster during the Civil War. With this experience, he returned after the war and began the Equitable of Iowa Insurance Company and the Pioneers Lawmakers' Association. Each helped to build a significant insurance and finance industry in Des Moines. Aside from his business influences, Sherman's home became a common meeting place for Civil War generals and was rented out to The Sisters of Mercy of Davenport and allowed his home to become the first Mercy Hospital, which operated for nearly two years.
