Photograph of Ole Weland, a resident of Norway, Iowa, who served during the Civil War. While on leave from the Iowa 15th Infantry, Weland and two other soldiers from Norway, Andrew Tow and Lars Uhr Bergeson, joined an Independent Artillery Unit made up entirely of Norwegian immigrants. The trio was sent to Kentucky, and then arrested for desertion from Iowa. Lore has it that the trio was pardoned by President Abraham Lincoln, however, there is no evidence to support this claim.
