The Dannevirke newspaper started publication in Elk Horn, Iowa in 1880, but moved to Cedar Falls in 1882, where it continued to be published until 1952. Danish immigrant Martin Holst was a printer who established Holst Printing Company, which published the paper until 1947 when another Dane, August Bang purchased it. The newspaper provided the Danish community with local and world news in their native language. The banner headline of this edition of the paper announced the end of World War II in Europe. It reads: "Denmark is free-War ended throughout Europe." Many of the Danes living in Cedar Falls would have had family in Denmark and this announcement would have been very important for them to learn.
