This 1855 census record lists the names of William Sunderlin, his wife Elizabeth, and their children, who lived in Cayuga County, New York at the time. In 1856, the family migrated to Iowa in an ox-drawn wagon, as many of the early pioneers did, and settled in Mount Vernon Township in Black Hawk County. Elizabeth Sunderlin passed away in December 1856, and William returned to New York, where he remarried. His 15-year-old son, Martin, stayed in Iowa. William returned to Mount Vernon Township sometime after 1860 and died there in May 1877 after a sudden illness. He was buried in Mount Vernon Township Cemetery.
