These census records list the name of Martin Van Buren Sunderlin, a resident of Mount Vernon Township, Black Hawk County. Sunderlin was fifteen years old when his parents, William and Elizabeth, moved in 1856 from their native New York State to Iowa. Sunderlin's mother died soon after the family moved to Black Hawk County, and when his father returned to New York, Martin stayed in Iowa and continued to live in Mount Vernon Township. When the Civil War erupted, Martin enlisted in Company E of the 12th Iowa Infantry on 21 October 1861. While serving in the war, Martin and many of the rest of his company were captured by the Confederate army at the Battle of Shiloh April 6-7, 1862. Martin survived the war and returned to Black Hawk County.
