This photo, taken in the early 1970s, shows the MacNeiley Drug Store located in Mount Ayr, Iowa. The building was built in 1895 and originally served as a jewelry store. In January 1906 Mount Ayr resident J. A. Williams opened a shoe store in the building. In 1927, Dr. C. C. Lawhead, a dentist, bought the building and opened his dentist office upstairs. J. A. Williams retired and sold his shoe store that same year, and the downstairs became a grocery store. Dr. Lawhead started a drug store on the ground floor in 1934. Finis Edward McNeiley bought the drug store in 1941, but Dr. Lawhead retained ownership of the building. McNeiley sold the drug store to his niece in 1974 and she sold it to Steve Mitchell in 1976. The building burned on June 6, 1977. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions in a lesson on town expansion and consumer culture of the mid-1900s.
