This photograph, taken around 1940, shows Currie's Jewelry Store and Piper's Grocery Store located on the north side the Mount Ayr, Iowa, town square. Currie's Jewelry Store belonged to Mount Ayr resident John Byrie Currie. Currie opened his first jewelry store in 1912, and moved to this location in 1920. This business remained open until Currie's retirement in 1947. This building collapsed in 1975. Piper's Grocery Store was operated by Howard Piper, who opened the business in 1934. The store remained open until 1945, when it was converted into a locker plant. The building was later torn down 1988.
