This photograph shows Dr. Levi J. Alleman, a resident of Boone, Iowa. Alleman was born in Fayette, Seneca County, New York on December 12, 1841. At the age of 17 he chose to begin reading about and taking courses in medicine, but he did not receive his degree until 1863 because he was not old enough. After practicing in Waterloo, New York, for a period of time, he entered the army as assistant surgeon of the First New York Veteran Calvary, a position he held until his regiment was mustered out at the conclusion of the Civil War. After the Civil War, Alleman traveled west and eventually settled in the new community of Boone. Over the next two decades, Alleman enjoyed a large practice as one of Boone's few surgeons and physicians.
