Both of these drums were used during the Civil War. The first was used by William C. Morse, who enlisted in the 100th Illinois Infantry in July, 1862 at the age of 36, to serve for three years. William and his drum marched through countless mountains and valleys while seeing action in the battles such as Stone's River, Tennessee, Chickamauga, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was wounded in the thigh and discharged in November, 1864. The second drum drum was carried by Thomas Taylor Van Cleave. He was a resident of Adel, Iowa and enlisted in Company C of the Iowa 39th Infantry in August, 1862. This drum likely saw action in the famous battles of Parker's Crossing, Tennessee and Allatoona, Georgia, as well as taking part in Union General William Sherman's 1864 March to the Sea. Thomas served to the end of the war, and was mustered out in June 1865.
