This is a photograph of Lieutenant Dale E. Christensen, a native of Gray, Iowa. Christensen joined the United States Army in 1940 and served during World War II with the 112th Cavalry Regiment. On July 16, 1944, Christensen single-handedly destroyed an enemy machine gun position while serving on New Guinea. Three days later, he located more enemy positions and led successful attacks against them. On August 4, 1944, Christensen lost his life while leading an attack on another enemy position. After his death, Christensen was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions from July 16 to July 19, 1944. He was the first Iowan to receive this award during World War II.
