Artist: Francesco Licciardi Title: Old Lady in a Carriage Medium: Oil on board Date: 1975 Credit Line: Dubuque Museum of Art. Gift of Dennis R. and Joan M. Timmermann. Description: Francesco Licciardi was known as an experimenter of forms and a man with a vision. He was born in Chicago in 1916 and lived there until 1955, studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art. In 1961, he moved to Dubuque, Iowa where he and his wife, Phyllis, resided for 21 years, raising a family of nine children. Throughout Licciardi’s career, he was frequently commissioned to do important portraits including those of political figures and prominent art collectors. These were popular commissions because of Licciardi’s ability to create a truly atmospheric portrait. This work is a prime example of that, and allows viewers to get a sense of the personality of the woman that served as the model for painting Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions in a lesson on art culture and Iowan artists.
