This scythe was used by one of the early settlers of O'Brien County, Iowa. Scythes were commonly used to mow grass or harvest crops before the invention and growing popularity of horse-drawn machinery and tractors. Content can be used with the following standards: 4th grade SS 4.26 Changes to Agriculture in a lesson on inventions and improvements on said inventions, that benefit farming and crop production.
