This memoir was written by Johann Jacob Ruff, a member of the Community of True Inspiration. Ruff's family joined the Community when he was very young. In 1843, when Ruff was 16, his family moved to the United States and settled in the Community's Ebenezer Colonies in New York. In 1856, Ruff moved to the Amana Colonies, which the Community founded in Iowa County, Iowa. Ruff lived in the Amana Colonies for the next 50 years. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.27 Immigration and Migration in a lesson on German immigrants in Iowa in the late 1800s and their contributions to the state.
