This photograph shows the wreckage of United Flight 232, which crashed at Sioux City's Sioux Gateway Airport in 1989. Flight 232 took off in Denver, Colorado and was headed toward Chicago, Illinois, when an engine blew apart and severed the airplane's controls. The pilots were able to control the plane and organize an emergency landing in Sioux City. As the plane approached the airport to land, its right wing hit the ground and caused a large explosion. 111 of the plane's 285 passengers passed away in the wreck.
