Cookstove canners, such as this one, was used by the women of the farm to can foods to store in cellars. Canning was crucial for Iowans during the 19th Century in Iowa. If families didn't can and store various foods for the winter, they would most likely run out of food. This means that the family would have to leave their settlement or face starvation. Women of all ages did the canning and storing process for their families. Sometimes this job would fall on young boys if their mothers needed help. The more canned goods stored, the better chance of surviving the winter a family had.
