Freshwater and Saltwater shells Change was inevitable when tariffs were imposed on the ocean shell, the natural resource Beopple used to create saltwater pearl buttons while in Germany. The resulting loss of his high profits earned through the production of saltwater pearl buttons drove Beopple to look elsewhere for mother of pearl material. The large freshwater shell that was sent by Beopple's extended family in America had been stored and forgotten on a shelf, until an idea took root; to use freshwater shell. Beopple traveled to America, joining a relative in the Midwest.
