This diary was written by Theodore S. Parvin, the first Masonic Grand Secretary for the Grand Lodge of Iowa. In this diary, dated 1839-1840, Parvin kept weather observations for Burlington and Bloomington (now Muscatine). Written on Cover: Abstract of Meteorological Observations for the Years 1839.40. 1901 Frazee, the first registered gas-powered vehicle in Iowa. George T. Frazee, an Osage jeweler, designed and built the 1901 Frazee at his home on the corner of 9th and Pleasant Street in Osage, Iowa. The two-cylinder car was handmade except for the wheels and tires which were purchased locally. Parts for the motor were cast at the Kelly-Morgan Iron Foundry in Osage. There is no steering wheel- instead the car is driven by using a lever, and a series of sprockets and chains to drive the car. It was the only model ever made. This plaque was presented to Cornelius Cadle III, a Civil War veteran, most likely in celebration of his accomplishments. The plaque, which is made of cast bronze, is 18 3/4 inches in diameter and one inch thick. Cornelius Cadle III grew up in Muscatine, Iowa, and then attended Iowa State College. He enlisted in the 11th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in October 1861 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant shortly after. These roof tiles were taken from a building in Buxton, Iowa. Buxton was a mining town founded in 1895 by the Consolidation Coal Company (CCC), which supplied the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. The company established Buxton after a four-year search for new coal veins. After its search, the company purchased 8600 acres of land in Monroe County and 1600 acres in neighboring Mahaska County in 1900 for $275,000. The mining business drew approximately 5,000 people to Buxton, creating a thriving economic and social community. Buxton soon became the largest unincorporated city in the nation and…

These leg braces were purchased for the eldest Granger child, Mabel, after being recommended to her by a doctor in Indianapolis to help a physical problem with her walking. At the time, the braces were purchased for $150, which today would equal around $3,400. The rather expensive purchase symbolized the Grangers' upper-class status.
