These leg braces were purchased for the eldest Granger child, Mabel, after being recommended to her by a doctor in Indianapolis to help a physical problem with her walking. At the time, the braces were purchased for $150, which today would equal around $3,400. The rather expensive purchase symbolized the Grangers' upper-class status.
