In "The History of the Danes in Iowa" the author has attempted a detailed history of the Danes in the state where they have been the most numerous since 1890 and where the largest rural settlement of them in the United States is situated. Since no history of the Danes in the United States approaching completeness has been written in English, it seemed desirable to introduce the chapters on the Danes in Iowa by chapters on the Danes in the United States; and since any immigrant group is best understood by first studying the setting of its former life, the monograph begins with a brief chapter on Denmark in the nineteenth century.
