This is a 1-liter German Army canteen used during the First World War. It is rounded on three sides, forcing it to be lain on its flattened side. The piece maintains its oiginal striped cloth covering, which is secured by four brass buttons, each of which sport a star decoration. The neck of the canteen consists of a metal screw cap, which is held fast by a leather strap to prevent it from becoming separated from the rest of the piece. Attached to a metal clasp is a large sheet of leather, which would have clipped onto a soldier's belt for easy carrying. The leather sheet is dated 1915. Canteens of this kind are extremely common artifacts, as they were regularly distributed to soldiers for rehydration. This piece is now a part of the Iowa Masonic Library's permanent collection.
