This is a copy of an original broadside that advertises a slave auction that was held on May 18, 1829. The names of several slaves are listed on the broadside, as well as their ages and occupations. The broadside also advertises the sale of goods such as rice, books, needles and a horse called Blucher. Iowa was a free state, so this auction may have taken place in nearby Missouri. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions and SS 5.26 Civil Rights to analyze how Iowa as free state compared to Missouri as a neighboring slave state. This can be also broadened to a lesson comparing the Union to the Confederacy. For any use other than instructional resources, please check with the organization that owns this item regarding copyright restrictions.
