This is a grain cradle and scythe. It belonged to Arthur Johnson who was born in 1877 near Nashua, Iowa. The grain cradle consists of a typical scythe, which is a curved blade attached to a long, curved handle, with additional fingers of curved wood attached. As the grain was cut by the scythe blade, the fingers cradled the grain and allowed the reaper to lay down the grain in a neat row for collection and threshing.
