This item is a cream separator of unknown creation date, although it appears early 20th century in design. Cream separators were used for separating cream elements from milk in order to produce other dairy products with that cream. An operator would mix milk with water in the separator, then mix the two together. When the cream had risen to the top after letting the mixture stand, the operator would slowly drain out all the ingedients: first the water, then the milk, then the cream. This process was an efficient method of separating cream and milk for many years. The water is not necessarily required for the process, but is known to accelerate the separation. Over time, the techniques and technology used in the process of cream separation has changed drastically, with each improvement making the process faster and more efficient.
