Ringgold County's first brick courthouse was built in Mount Ayr between 1883 and 1884. The tower was located on the east side of the courthouse and was 102 feet tall. The bell tower also served as a fire alarm and curfew bell. Due to foundation settling and inferior building products, the courthouse was condemned in 1921 and demolished in 1922.
