Montgomery E. Freeland first opened Freeland's Department Store in 1891. After his death in 1895, Freeland's wife, Marjorie, and his son, John, continued the business. They moved the store to this location in 1948. After moving to its new location, the store also sold appliances as the end of World War II and the introduction of electricity to rural Ringgold County greatly increased the demand for such items. Freeland's Department Store sold out to Woodward & Co. in 1949. C. R. Anthony & Co. later bought the business in 1956 and closed it in 1980.
