This photograph shows Conrad Brown (or Braun; he used both spellings) in his Army uniform. Brown, who lived in Muscatine, joined the service in 1862 and was assigned to Company C, 35th Iowa Infantry, as a fifer and drummer. During the war, Brown took part in battles at Jackson, Vicksburg, and Tupelo, Mississippi. He was discharged on August 10, 1865. After the war Brown became a farmer, married an Iowa girl, Margaret Schmidt, and had one son and five daughters. In 1902 the couple moved to Dickinson County, buying 160 acres of farmland near Milford for $2.00 an acre. Conrad Brown died in 1922 and is buried in the Milford Cemetery.
