This drum was used by Iowan Conrad Brown during the Civil War. Drums were vital military equipment. Their rhythm helped marching troops keep in step, and they were loud enough to convey commands over the shouts and shots of battle. Brown used this drum in the battles of Jackson, Vicksburg, and Tupelo, Mississippi.
