This "grip box" belonged to William H. Cobb, one of the founders of Tipton, Iowa. After the Civil War started, Cobb, who lived in Illinois at the time, joined the 126th Illinois Infantry Regiment, Company E, and was stationed at Point Lookout, Maryland, where he was commissary of prisoners of war. He was also involved in the siege of Vicksburg and in many other skirmishes. Cobb came to Iowa in 1865 and engaged in the dry goods trade for many years.
