These badges were given to members of the Audubon County Militia, which was organized during World War II. On February 16, 1942, Audubon County Sheriff F. Clemmensen deputized six small town police and 23 civilians as deputy sheriffs "without compensation". They were to help in all of the duties of the sheriff and in guarding the properties of the people in Audubon County. The militia received a shipment of 65 rifles and 9 revolvers, ammunition and a box of deputy sheriff badges from the government to support their work. The militia disbanded in late 1944. Sheriff Clemmensen collected the guns, counted the bullets (none were missing), and relieved the squad of their badges. He wrote his final report December 5, 1944.
