This photograph was taken after the first organizational meeting for the Stilson, Iowa, Ladies' Aid Society. Ladies' Aid Societies were organizations for women that were first founded during the Civil War to provide supplies and aid to soldiers. These organizations also played an important role in World War I. Many Ladies' Aid Societies, including Stilson's, were organized by local churches. Stilson's society was organized and led by Pastor Minnie Copel (front row, fourth from left with child on lap). Content can be used with the following standards: SS-US 9-12.23 Iowans Influence US History in a lesson on women's contribution to WWI homefront effort.
