Milking cows by hand and then separating was an example of a labor intensive task done by most every farm family. Children were involved in the milking, bringing the cows in from the pasture, making butter from the cream, turning the crank on the separator, and feeding calves and pigs with the skim milk. Cows were fed silage in the winter and allowed to graze in the pasture or road ditch in the summer.
