Eastman Kodak Camera, 1909 Belonged to William Baylis, Landscape Photographer of Eastern Iowa William Baylis was a landscape photographer most popularly known for his photographs of Linn County and Eastern Iowa. A prolific photographer, Baylis was active from early 1890s until the mid-1920s. Baylis photographed parades, circuses, street scenes, and even industrial disasters. Baylis was often humorous in his picture taking and was sometimes seen posing in his photographs with other people on the street. The camera held in The History Center collection is an Eastman Kodak Camera from 1909. Written on the inside of the camera in pencil is the inscription "RETURN TO WM BAYLIS, 713 4TH AVE, CEDAR RAPIDS, IA." Baylis was born on September 12, 1873 in Wheatland, Iowa. At the age of 15, Baylis relocated with his family to Cedar Rapids where he developed an interest in photography. With a successful career spanning decades, Baylis is credited with shooting close to 25,000 photographs of early Linn County and Eastern Iowa as well as hundreds more of California and other western states.
