During the turn of the century, fire house carts were used to transport hoses to the burning site. This cart is called a hand drawn hose cart. At times, fireman had to get to the fire quickly. The whose would be wound up and then two firemen would grab on either side of the black handle to steer the cart. They would push the hose as close to the fire as possible. With the power of steam engines and later on the combustion motor, the need for hand drawn hose carts diminished.
