South of Anamosa, Iowa, and just a bit south of the Wapsipinicon River, is the site of the Anamosa Hillclimb. This AMA Sanctioned event has been held on this site for 68 years and attracts over 100 entries and thousands of spectators. Promoters of hillclimb events need a steep hill that presents a challenge for motorcycle riders, and they found one that's just right near Anamosa. It is likely that over tens of thousands of years the Wapsi cut through the territory and, reduced to a smaller river was once deep and wide. Now the hillside is exposed. In this timed Hillclimb event, like a drag race, the best riders will make it to the top and over. Those less skilled will need more practice, more attempts and likely some modifications to their motorcycle chassis or engine to make the machine better able to climb the hill. While motorcycle hillclimb is very old form of motorcycle competition, there are only about a dozen hills that are used regularly, and groomed for competition.
