John Vincent Bloom was born in DeWitt, IA in 1906. Later in 1932, Bloom joined the Stone City Art Colony after being invited by Grant Wood himself. Bloom relocated to Stone City, just outside of Anamosa, IA, to be a part of the colony. During his time in Stone City, he worked as an industrial designer four days out of the week and created lithographs on the weekends. Lithographs such has the monkey lithograph pictured above. These monkeys were most likely a reference drawing to his "Monkey Island" painting which was created in 1987. In 1969, Bloom retired from commercial art and picked up wood carving and sketching until his death in May 2002. Before his death, Bloom created murals for the University Hospitals in Iowa City, the Davenport Bank, and the Trust Company. Bloom was also given an Honorary Doctorate Degree from St. Ambrose University.
