These objects pictured above, starting from the left, are a scale slide, scale button, rivet, and a "J" hook. The scale slide and scale button were used predominately by the Union Army while the "J" hook and rivets were commonly used on both sides during the Civil War. The scale slide and scale button were used to attach shoulder scales to a soldier's uniform. These scales were used as a form of body armor and adornment for the different branches of the army. Essentially, these shoulder scales were to add a form of protection during a sword fight. The "J" hook was used to attach items to a knapsack and to strap the knapsack to a soldier. They were also attached to a rifleman's belt for extra support. Rivets had infinite purposes. Equipment rivets were used on saddles, sword belts, cartridge boxes, and so on and were typically made of brass. Cast brass rivets were essential to sword hangers and knapsacks.
