2019.007.001 [Tusk, Mammoth]

This mastodon tusk was discovered in the 1930s in Hampton, Iowa while digging a gravel pit. The tusk is twelve feet long and weighs around six hundred pounds. After it was discovered, the people of Hampton celebrated the tusk's discovery by displaying it throughout town, as well as using the tusk to teach school children. In 1933, the University of Northern Iowa acquired the tusk. The tusk was then heavily researched by Dr. Emmett J. Cable. After Dr. Cable concluded his research, the tusk went to the UNI Museum so it could be put on display. The tusk has been on display since 1960, but has been reexamined and restored due to water damage and tusk breakage.
