This is a clipping of a student comment in the Davenport High yearbook "Blackhawk" in 1916. The caption below the photograph of a female student named Leona Gimbel reads, "I have lived in Davenport all my life, in which city I consider it an honor to live, among such loyal friends to the Kaiser. Attended St. Mary's School, from which I graduated in '12, and then entered this great beloved school to take the Commercial Course, from which I now sadly depart. Little but mighty." This is in reference to the (then) current ruler of Germany, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who reigned over the German Empire from 1888 to 1918. During the First World War, many rural Americans of German descent felt sympathy for the German Empire, especially in the years building up to the United States' entrance into the conflict on the side of the Allies.
