This is a photograph of Willi Schwoebel, a music conductor for the German Army during the Second World War. Schwoebel was captured during his service in the Afrika Corps and sent to the Algona prisoner of war camp in Algona, IA. He served his time in the camp as the conductor of the camp prisoner band in addition to his labor expectations. According to sources, Schwoebel was also a strong advocate of German national pride and German heritage. After the war, he returned to Germany and became a violin player in an orchestra.
