This is a photograph of Hoyt Sherman's historic home in 1877 after its initial construction. The building was established in Des Moines and served a variety of community purposes throughout its history in the Iowa state capital city. In 1893, Hoyt Sherman rented the building to the Sisters of Mercy, who ran the first Mercy Hospital in the space for two years while they prepared to build a permanent hospital facility.
