Primers such as this one were used to teach 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Norwegian-Americans the Norwegian language, as religious instruction in the Norwegian language continued in many Norwegian-American Lutheran church congregations well into the 20th century. This particular primer was published in 1897 by the Norwegian Synod's Publishing House located in Decorah, Iowa. Content can be used with the following standards: 1st grade SS 1.23 Cultural Makeup, 3rd grade SS 3.27 Immigration and Migration, 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contribution and SS-Geo.9-12.24 Iowans Influence Environment. Content can be used with other Norwegian artifacts (located in relations) in a lesson on Norwegian immigrants in Iowa and their impact and contributions to the state.
