This button bears the face and name of Elijah Muhammad, who served as the leader of the Nation of Islam from 1934 to 1975. The Nation of Islam was an African American political and religious organization founded in Detroit, Michigan. During Muhammad's time as president, the Nation of Islam grew rapidly and took control of various stores, farmland, and even a bank. The organization also opened 47 schools in cities across the United States.
