2018.018.105 [Stand, Shoeing]

This wooden hoof-trimming stand was used by Henry Neumann to trim the hooves of horses and oxen. Henry Neumann was born in 1859 in Germany and was brought by his father, Frederick, to Black Hawk County in 1862 when he was about 1 1/2 years old. This stand probably dates from the early 1900s. A hoof-trimming stand (also called a hoofjack) allowed the farrier to rest the horse's hoof on the top of the stand while he did the trimming. This saved wear and tear on the back.
