Hy-Vee came to Mount Ayr in 1947 when Hyde & Vredenburg Inc. opened Hyde's Food Store in town. In 1952, the corporation changed the names of all of its stores to Hy-Vee. Mount Ayr's Hy-Vee operated in this building from 1962 until 1992, when it was replaced by a larger building in another part of town.
