The Mount Ayr Hotel was first constructed in Mount Ayr, Iowa, between 1865 and 1880. The hotel was condemned in 1922, but attorney George Bartow bought the hotel in 1923 and reopened it in 1924. Several owners later, Mabel McCullough Rice, a prominent Mount Ayr citizen, closed the hotel around 1986. The building was later demolished in 1994. The man standing in front of the hotel is George Bartow, who owned the hotel from 1923 until 1929.
