William Timby, a Mount Ayr, Iowa, resident, constructed this building in 1890 after a fire destroyed a wood-framed building that stood in this location. In 1891, Montgomery Freeland opened Freeland's Department Store, a clothing and dry goods store, in the building's first floor. Freeland's store remained in this location until 1933. At the time this photo was taken, Dr. Carlton C. Lawhead, a dentist, occupied the left half of the upstairs while attorneys Lewis & Lewis occupied the right half.
