This photograph, taken sometime after 1900, shows Mary Hanna, one of the first settlers of Waterloo, Iowa. Hanna, along with her husband George and brother John Melrose, arrived in the Cedar Valley in July 1845. They settled on a ridge near a ford called Prairie Rapids that overlooked the Cedar River. In the decades that followed, many other settlers came to the area and made it a place of industry. Hanna passed away in 1912.
