In 1900, a standard kitchen was considered a work room. Unlike our standard kitchens today, the kitchen was relatively small even in large homes. It contained a sink with a counter or drain board on one side of the room, and a wood or gas range stove on the opposite wall. Even though cupboards were present at this time, the most common type of wall hangings were open shelves that held spices and jars. Another important feature in a 1900 American kitchen was the pantry. The pantry was considered a closet in the kitchen that held canned food and dry ingredients. At times, the pantry was also considered the butler closet and contained the fine china and formal dinner wear. Another items that could be found in the kitchen: a table to prepare dishes and where the children would eat, cabinets to hold fine china, an icebox to preserve dairy and meat products, and laundry items to do laundry.
