2018.073.007 [Bonnet, War]

This Native American Headdress is comprised of decorative feathers that form a ring around a leather band, attached at the base. This particular headdress is called a war bonnet. Contrary to popular belief, war bonnets were never used by most American Indian tribes even though they are widely known. The tribes that wore these war bonnets were located in the Great Plain such as the Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, and Cree. The Sioux were thought to be the first American Indian group our of the Great Plains tribes to use the war bonnet.
