This hand colored lithograph was commissioned by Grant Wood in 1938. This lithograph was part of a series of lithographs made by Grant Wood. The original copy was drawn by Grant Wood, but not colored. Mr. Wood sent the drawing to his sister, Nan Wood Graham to color. (mfa.org) Grant Wood was born in Anamosa, Iowa. He was a very well known artist and a teacher at the University of Iowa. Grant Wood's most famous painting was the iconic "American Gothic" (uima.uiowa.edu).
